Obituary

Gloria Lucille Shanks was born November 11, 1938.  She passed February 12, 2020.

Gloria is survived by her son Jim (Judy) Shanks, daughter Stephanie (Keith) Early, brother Matthew (Holly) Charboneau, nieces Linda, Cindy, Carrie, Cheryl, Cathy, and nephew Rick, five grandsons and five great granddaughters.  She was preceded in death by an infant son James L A Shanks, daughters Dodie Mullinix and Mary Cheyette, parents Matt and Dora Charboneau, sisters Mary Higgins and Jeanette Puffer, and her former husband James Shanks.

Gloria was a woman of many accomplishments.  She was the Lompoc Valley Women of the Year 1992-93, As the first Female Lions Member of the Lions Club she went on to be President and Vice President of the Lompoc Host Lions Club from 1996-97.  She was Chair and Vice Chair of the board of directors of the Food Pantry and a Food Pantry representative to the United Way 1992 campaign and Chair to the Commerce Division of the United Way in 1992.  She was on the Board of Director of the Half Century Club, Vice President of the Lompoc Valley Women in Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Lompoc Valley Flower Festival Association food Booths, and a founding member of the Lompoc Agriculture Youth Boosters club for the FFA at Lompoc High School.  Her contributions of time and energy helped raise funds for the Lompoc Hospital foundation, the American Business Women's scholarship fund, the United way, the food pantry and the Lompoc Lions club.  She organized Bunko for the Half Century Club, was a member of the Kennel Club in the 1970s and 1980s, developed the CRIS directory of county city services, was a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and collected eyeglasses for the Lions Club.  She would help others in the Skilled Nursing and Rehab center and would host and organize the Singles Club in Lompoc.

One of Gloria's proudest accomplishments was raising four children by herself who all led productive lives.  She made the best Banana cream pie, chocolate Fudge, and Lasagna.  Gloria played Bingo at every bingo game in a 50-mile radius and any another Bingo game she could find.  She made numerous vacations throughout the US and the United Kingdom with her daughters.

A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday February 29th at 4:00 pm at the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Event Center, 138 North B Street in Lompoc.
