Harlan Oakes of Lompoc passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at the age of 97.
Harlan was born February 21, 1910 in Massac County, Illinois to Arthur and Katherine Oakes. He attended Northwestern University majoring in journalism.
He joined the United States Air Force and served for 30 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1969. He owned and operated his own national broadcasting and media company and wrote radio editorials. Formerly of Woodland Hills, he has been a resident of Lompoc since 1979
A self-described casual golfer, Harlan was a member of the Village Country Club. He was also a member of the VFW, the Retired Officers Association, the Sons of the Revolution, the Order of Founders and Patriots of America, the Baronial Order of the Magna Carta, the Order of the Crown, and the United Empire Loyalists.
Harlan was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane Oakes in 1977. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Jane Moffett of Glen, New Hampshire; his son, Howard F. Oakes of Fountain Valley, four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia L. Oakes and Julia Wilson, and his brother Lowell Oakes.
The visitation and funeral service will be on Monday, August 27, at 12:00 noon at the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Private interment will follow in the Riverside National Cemetery at a later date.
