Obituary

Harold V. George was born June 21, 1923, in the Township of Roodhouse, Illinois and passed away on February 24, 2011 in Lompoc, California.

Harold was raised in Illinois. He spent his childhood in a rural community, fostering his love of vegetable gardening and raising animals, a love that he nourished into his later years. He graduated from Roodhouse High School in 1941. In 1943, Harold enlisted in the Army Air Force and served with the 6th Bomb GP 39th Bomb Squadron, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He participated in Air Offensive Japan, the Eastern Mandates and the Western Pacific, and was awarded 3 Bronze Stars for the above campaigns and also a Good Conduct Medal. In 1950, he was called back into service during the Korean Conflict. He and his family arrived in Lompoc in 1960, where he worked at Lompoc Hospital as an accountant and office manager. He also worked at Jalama Beach County Park for a time. He was an active 4-H mentor, and helped in the raising of a Grand Champion pig. An avid and successful gardener, all of his children had road-side stands selling the surplus from his vegetable gardens. He is remembered around town by those who would see him walking in his signature "bucket hat."

Harold is survived by siblings Lloyd (Ann) George, Lee (Imogene) George and Helen McLamar; children Alan (Jamie) George, Emily (Richard) Fevinger, Leslie (Dennis) Avila and Erin Haky; grandchildren Jessica (Jeffrey) Morgan, Ryan (Laurie) George, Garrett (Stacy) Fevinger, Kayla Fevinger, Amy (Kyle) Welliver, Katherine Avila, Nicholas Avila, Lauren Haky and Morgan Haky; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was his wife of 49 years, Helen B George and siblings Buell George, Ellsworth George, Veda Hamilton and Mildred Havlin.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery on Friday March 18, 2011 at 11am. Pastor Nicholas Lewis of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church will preside with military honors provided by the Air Force Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the care of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. www.starbucklind.com
