Obituary

Harry Jr. was born to Harry Sr. and Edith Westfall in Davenport, Iowa on October 23, 1941. He is survived by his wife Unsuk, son Shawn, daughter-in-law Deana, and grandchildren Andrew, Nicholas and Samantha. He was one of six children and is also survived by his brother Ken and sisters Lois and Karen. His brother Wendell and sister Joyce preceded him in passing.

Harry retired from the Air Force in 1982 after 20 years of active duty. During his time of service he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Culver Stockton College. While stationed in Korea, he met Unsuk, his true love and wife of 43 years. Together they overcame life's challenges, raised a family, and remained devoted to each other throughout.

Other than the Air Force, Harry had many jobs over the course of his life. Disc jockey, Aerospace Engineer, Financial Analyst, and Snowy Plover protector were just a few. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, often more than one job at a time. To him, personal sacrifice was a matter of course if it meant a better life for those he loved. He expected no recognition or fanfare, but took his satisfaction from a smile on his child's face, or a loving glance from his wife. Their joy was his joy and hard work was a small price to pay.

Harry had several pastimes including playing golf, watching boxing, and reading a good book. His favorite things included Harley Davidson's, cheeseburgers, and his grandchildren. I think his perfect day would start with a good cup of coffee, a par round of golf, ringside seats at a title fight, rounded off with a few pages of a good biography and a loving embrace from his wife.

Harry will always be remembered for his compassion, generosity, kindness, and humor, all of which he displayed in abundance. Although he worked hard for his money, he readily helped those in need, without expecting repayment. He rooted for the underdog because he had overcome so much adversity in his own life. And he was always the life of the party because making others laugh was what he was best at. He will be truly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Please join us for a celebration of Harry's life to be held at the Vandenberg AFB Main Chapel (Chapel #1 – 587 Summersill Rd. VAFB) on Saturday, November 15, 2008. Viewing begins at 11:00 a.m. with services to begin at noon.
