IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harvey Douglas
Wynne
September 22, 1943 – December 4, 2021
Harvey Douglas Wynne was born September 22, 1943, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Charles and Dorothy (McTaggart) Wynne. He went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 4, 2021 at age 78. He was doing one of his favorite things, hiking, when he passed instantly into his eternal reward. He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Charles Wynne and Russell Gregorchuk and sisters Christine Gregorchuk Erickson and Vi Gregorchuk Hampsten.
Harvey's father was killed in WWII in 1944 when he was a year old. Sometime later, his mother, Dorothy, married widower William Gregorchuk who had five daughters. They became an instant blended family. In January 1953, they immigrated to the U.S. and landed in California where Harvey later on became a naturalized citizen. His Dad, Bill, was in the construction trade and taught the boys how to build things from an early age. Harvey joined the California National Guard and was called to duty during the Watts Riots of 1965. As an adult, he became a General Building Contractor. In 1967, a friend brought him an application for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. He joined the department in 1967 and worked there until his retirement in 2003. He liked to say, "I cheated death and saved lives."
Harvey graduated from Simi Valley High School in 1962, where he was a California C.I.F. champion in wrestling for his weight class (133 & 139) two years in a row. He was quite active throughout his life in many sports. At age 50, he took up swimming and began competing in half-marathon triathlons and the Big Sur Marathon. As a lifetime adventurer, he loved downhill skiing, hiking, backpacking, and motorcycle racing with a few broken bones along the way.
Harvey became a friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed building our three homes in Lompoc, as well as some for others and working with Habitat for Humanity. He spent many fun spring break trips to Ensenada, Mexico with Westmont College Potter's Clay program. They would build a basic home in a week for a family. He also took many Missions trips through church connections to India, Guatemala, Cancun, and an Arizona Indian reservation. His current woodworking skills were put to use making birdhouses and whirly-gigs for our own yard or for friends. The final structure he was working on was a "She Shed" for Jeannette. He was so excited about the project, but didn't get time to finish it.
He loved hiking at the Mission in recent years with friends from our Lompoc Foursquare Church. It was at LFC he continued his journey of faith for over 20 years. He and three friends were hiking at Surf Beach, out to the caves and back that final day when he was struck down and left this earth.
Harvey is survived by the love of his life, wife Jeannette, his only son Shawn (Angela) Wynne, and "Papa" to his beloved granddaughters Fallon Wynne and Paris Wynne. Also, brothers Robert (Jill) Gregorchuk, Stephen (Kim) Gregorchuk, sisters Julie Gregorchuk Lilley, Doris Gregorchuk Lewis, Carol Gregorchuk Hensley, and Teri Gregorchuk Bianchi (Robert). We lost count long ago of the number of nieces, nephews, greats, and great-grand nieces & nephews. He loved being part of this huge blended and loving family! Harvey's daily prayer was that all of our family would come to know the peace of God through his son Jesus Christ like he had experienced.
The celebration of Harvey's life will be Saturday, December 18, at 2 pm at Lompoc Foursquare Church. Memorials may be made to Lompoc Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 88, Lompoc, CA 93438 or Lompoc Foursquare Church Building Fund, 125 No. C St., Lompoc, CA 93436.
