Hazel Maxine Costa, 103, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2022, in Santa Maria, CA.
Hazel was born in Los Alamos CA to Joe V. and Mary P. Rodrigues on November 8, 1919. The birth took place in the family farmhouse in Cañada Laguna Seca approximately 2 ½ miles west of Los Alamos.
Hazel attended Los Alamos School and was a 1939 graduate of Santa Maria High School.
She married George V. Costa in 1944 with whom she lived in Los Alamos, Solvang and (since 1958) in Lompoc, CA. Hazel was a homemaker. After George's death in 2001, Hazel remained in her Lompoc home until 2016 when dementia required that she reside in the memory residences at Merrill Gardens in Santa Maria.
She was a congregant of La Purisima Concepcion Catholic Church. Hazel was an active member of many Portuguese fraternal societies: the DES, UPPEC, SPPRC. She was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She and her husband George also liked to take long Sunday drives around the tri-counties often ending up with a visit to family members. Another of her passions was gardening.
Hazel is survived by her younger sister Mabel Silva (Tony, deceased), brother-in-law Frank Costa (Katherine, deceased), nephews Maynard (Rosamund), Edward Rodrigues (Jan), Stan Rodrigues (Laura), Steven Silva (Alicia), Gary Silva (Becky), Frank Costa (Kim). She is also survived by her nieces Kathi Downey (George) and Roberta Blake (Don). She is also survived by grandnephew Ethan Silva and grandniece Marisa Hammett (Champ) who are her twin sister's grandchildren. Finally, Hazel is survived by several grandnephews/grandnieces and great-grandnephews/grandnieces.
In addition to her husband George, Hazel was predeceased by her parents and her twin sister Helen Rodriguez (Manuel Silva, deceased, Frank, deceased), brother Albert Rodrigues (Ganovefa, deceased), sister Gloria Silva (John, deceased), brother-in-law Louie Costa (May), niece Mary Ann Rios (Charles), and nephew Richard Costa.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm in the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at La Purisima Concepcion Catholic Church in Lompoc. Interment will follow in the Lompoc Cemetery with a reception following at the Events Mission Valley 138 North B Street, Lompoc.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Hazel's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 120 E. Jones St., Ste. 113, Santa Maria, CA, (805) 636-6432.
