Obituary

Hazel Ray Thompson passed away in her home on May 20, 2019, in Lompoc, California, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God were a great support in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. She was 84 years old.

Hazel was born on August 2, 1934, in Tulare, CA, to Emily Martin and William Martin, Sr. of Pixley, CA.  She grew up in a large and loving family, and Hazel was the eldest of ten children. Her family worked in agriculture harvesting fields throughout the Central and San Joaquin Valleys of California.

Hazel married LeRoy Glen Thompson on December 31, 1953, in Bakersfield, CA. Glen and Hazel lived in Bartlesville, OK; Tulare, CA, Antelope Valley, CA, and finally settled in Lompoc in 1959 where they raised their three children. Glen worked in Aerospace on Vandenberg Air Force Base and Hazel began her long career in 1966 with the Lompoc Unified School District. After 31 years of service, she retired in 1997 as the Executive Secretary to the Superintendent.  The district Board of Education presented Hazel with a resolution in 1996 commending her for her long and productive service. Hazel, known as "a grand lady," was loved and respected by everyone in the district.

Hazel was an active member of the Lompoc Church of Christ for 60 years where she was involved in singing programs and teaching Bible classes. She was an avid and expert quilter and was the past President of Quilters Etc. Guild. She provided many quilts to her family and friends, as well as cuddle quilts for the Lompoc Pregnancy and Parenting Support Center. Hazel had many other talents, most notably oil painting, singing and playing the guitar.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Glen Thompson; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Ann Thompson of Lompoc, CA; daughter, Debbie Landry of League City, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Hoefer of Cocoa, FL; granddaughters, Aimee (Bryan) Massey of Tyler, TX, and Alisha (Jon) Roberts of Sugarland, TX; and great-grandchildren, Emerson and Ellis Massey, and Hensley and Beau Roberts; brothers, Bill (Pat), Earl (Linda) and Roy Martin; sisters, JoAnn (Wes) Anderson and Betty (Shaen) Magan; and sister-in-law, Willadean Thompson. She is preceded in death by her parents Emily Martin and William Martin; parents-in-law, LeRoy and Gladys Thompson; sisters, Judy Martin (infant) and Irma Covington; brothers, Phillip and Nick Martin, and brother-in-law, Carl Thompson.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place on June 15, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lompoc Church of Christ, 138 North O Street, Lompoc, CA. Roy Senior will be officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to the Lompoc Church of Christ Benevolence Fund.
