Hedwig Blohm was born on November 27, 1917, in Germany to parents Joseph and Emma Mohr. She was the eldest of three sisters, a good student and a big help to her mother during the difficult economic times following World War I. When she was twelve her father immigrated to the USA, became a citizen and worked to bring his family to this country. It took seven years before Emma and the girls were allowed to leave Germany.
Hedwig was 19 when she arrived in New York City. She lived with her parents and sisters until she met and married Christian Blohm in 1937. The couple moved upstate to make their home in Dutchess County, New York. They had no children of their own, but were close to their nieces and nephews.
In the 1950's Hedwig's hay fever and asthma worsened and they moved to New Mexico where she found relief. They both loved the "Land of Enchantment" and lived in Albuquerque, where she and her husband were licensed realtors. After Christian's death in 1985, Hedwig moved to Lompoc, California with her widowed mother to be near her sister's family. She cared for her mother until Emma entered the Lompoc Convalescent Care Center.
Hedwig enjoyed travel and took a number of trips and cruises with friends or family. She moved to the CCC herself in 2005 and appreciated the care they provided as she became increasingly frail.
Hedwig is survived by nephews John Pieck of New York, Henry Pieck of Florida, niece Hedy Damery, and grandnephew John Anton Kiernan, both of San Luis Obispo. As she wished, there will be no services.
