Obituary

GROSSMAN, Helen

Helen Grossman was born Nov. 13, 1917 in Santa Monica, California. She was 92 when she peacefully passed away in the comforts of her home on July 8th, surrounded by family, her two dogs and cat. Helen graduated from San Diego High School and then attended the University of California, Berkeley. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with honors and was a Phi Beta Kappa Society member. Helen was then employed as a statistician for a San Francisco stock and bond company before marrying her college sweetheart. Helen married Lawrence Grossman, a graduate of UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law, in 1940. The two settled in Lompoc in 1941. Helen welcomed their only child, daughter Laurie, while Larry was serving in the Navy. She worked with her husband's law firm for over 40 years until Lawrence Grossman's passing in 1983.

Helen loved Lompoc and her devotion to the community was evident in the many years of service to the Santa Barbara County Schools as a member of their Board. She was an elected member of the County Board of Education since 1969 and attended her last meeting one month before her passing. Helen was also on the Board of the Lompoc Museum, member of the Eastern Star, Community Woman's Club, Alpha Club, A.A.U.W., California Elected Women's Association for Education and Research, the Lompoc Hospital District Foundation, Lompoc Historical Society, Native Daughters of the Golden West and The Library Foundation Advisory Board. Helen was also a dedicated supporter of causes for the arts, animals and the environment.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Laurie Weaver; her grandson, Stephen Palmer; her son-in-law, Barry Weaver and loving family friend Maria Baltierra. Helen was preceded in death by her mother Sada Stewart Stuchberry. The family would like to personally thank Marian Hospice and caregivers Tammy Garner and Karen Dominguez for their extraordinary care during her illness. All services will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to Friends of the Lompoc Library, 501 E. North Avenue, Lompoc, CA. 93436.

Helen will be dearly missed, never forgotten and always loved.
