Obituary

Henry Russell “Russ” Giles (“Russ” to most, lovingly known as “Papa Bear” to many)

Henry Russell Giles, 63, passed away on March 24, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the Orangevale/Sacramento area.

Russ was born in Santa Barbara, California, at Cottage Hospital, where many of his siblings and family members were also born. He spent much of his life throughout Santa Barbara County, living in various communities and forming lasting friendships wherever he went. To many, he became more than a friend—he became family.

Russ passed away as the result of a tragic accident while coming to the aid of an elderly tenant at the mobile home park he managed. In doing so, he has been remembered by many as a hero—an example of the selflessness and compassion that defined his life.

A high school graduate, Russ built a career in the construction trades, becoming highly skilled in multiple areas. He was especially known for his expertise in skylights and roofing, earning recognition as one of the county’s top specialists. He proudly operated his own business, Russ’s Skylights, for many years.

Russ was a man of many passions. He was an avid fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast, and talented mechanic. He had a natural ability to take others under his wing, offering guidance, support, and a sense of belonging. He believed deeply in family and in caring for one another. Traits that he engraved in his for boys.

Later in life, Russ embraced his faith wholeheartedly. He devoted himself to Christianity and worked diligently to share his beliefs, hoping to bring comfort, truth, and encouragement to those around him.

He was a father to many, a friend to all, and an inspiration in more ways than he may have ever known. Russ will be remembered for his love of loud music, his larger-than-life personality, and his ability to fix just about anything.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Witherspoon, Jack and Kathleen Giles, and his older brother, Don Giles.

He is survived by his siblings, Jack Jr., Jeanene, Rozanna, Joseph, and Kenneth; his four sons, Russell, Brian, Timothy, and Matthew; and his beloved grandchildren, Fury, Brian Jr., Brenna, Kannon, Hunter, Elisa, and Lillith, along with many nieces and nephews.

Russ will be laid to rest beside his brother, Don Giles.

A viewing will be held on March 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary in Lompoc. Following the viewing, a graveside service will take place at Lompoc Cemetery, where words will be shared by ordained minister Tony Hurley, along with family and friends.

A reception will follow from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Grange Hall located at 435 N. G St., Lompoc, CA. All family and friends are warmly invited to attend, pay their respects, and celebrate Russ’s life together—just as he would have wanted.

Russ was a devoted father, a loyal friend, and a good man. His family wishes deeply for more time with him, but finds comfort in the love and memories he leaves behind. His life touched many, and his legacy will live on through all who knew and loved him.

In faith and hope, his family shares this prayer:

“Lord, receive his soul with open arms. Until we meet again, we hold onto the promise of reunion. We love you, Dad. Amen.”
