Obituary

Hiroyo "Sue" Corn passed away on October 13, 2007, at her home in Lompoc. Hiroyo was born on April 8, 1926, to Dochi and Toyosee Oba on the southern island of Fukuoka, Japan. Hiroyo's father Dochi was the Buddist Priest in the temple where Hiroyo was born and raised. Hiroyo had a fine educational background in which she completed seamstress, teaching, and business courses.

In 1947 Hiroyo went to work for a U.S. Army office in Japan where she did typing and other secretarial duties. It was there she met her husband of 34 years, Thomas Corn, a U.S. Army Sergeant. In 1958 she came to the United States.

Hiroyo was a homemaker and good mother to her husband and two children, Maryjane and George. Hiroyo loved and lived for her family. She loved children and did childcare for numerous families in Lompoc. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they all very much enjoyed spending time with their "Obosan" as well. Hiroyo will be remembered for her cooking, the love she had for her family, her fun sense of humor, and the great sense of pride she felt for her culture and of her lifetime achievements. She will be dearly missed by her family and all that knew her.

Hiroyo's family would like to thank Amanda Gonzales for providing excellent care in making Hiroyo comfortable in her last days. The family would like to thank Sumi Foster for making all the special meals which were at Hiroyo's request and for the communication she provided to Hiroyo's family in Japan. Also they would like to say thank you to the Hospice Association, especially to nurses Marvick, Donna, and Kathy for being so helpful and supportive, and "thank you" to the medical staff at Lompoc Hospital.

Hiroyo was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Thomas, who passed away in 1989. She is survived by her daughter, Maryjane Elledge, and son, George Corn, both of Lompoc; her two sisters, Yaeko Hayakawa and Teruyo Munakata; one brother, Kazuyoshi Oba; and a niece, Naoe Oba-Yamada, all of Fukuoka, Japan. Hiroyo had four grandchildren, Salina Gonzales of Santa Barbara, Charlene "Charlie" Corn-Soto of Lompoc, George Corn II of Lompoc, and Thomas Corn II of Lompoc; and five great grandchildren, Teresa, Alexandria, Angel, Gwenneth, and Victoria, all of Lompoc.

Cremation will be followed by private graveside services, which will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Hospice Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
