Howard Nels Dyste
January 22, 1915 - April 20, 2009
Howard died peacefully with his family at his side during his last week of life.
He was born in Brookings, South Dakota, to Alma Flittie Dyste and Gerhardt Maurice Dyste.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Frances and his 7 children: Paula (Dave) Rothling, Susan (Tony) Battistella, Mary Jensen, Nancy (LD) Christiano, Donna (John) Sommer, Fred (Marie) Dyste and Sarah Dyste as well as 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister Bette Reeve and was pre-deceased by his sisters Doris Mernaugh and Donna Healy as well as 2 infant grandchildren.
Howard graduated from South Dakota State in 1938. In 1941 he joined the Army Air Corp as a Private. He was stationed in North Africa and Italy during World War II.
Fran and Howard were married in New York at St. Patrick's Cathedral on March 25, 1943, prior to his overseas assignment. He was called back to military service in 1950 and he served in the Air Force until he retired in 1967 as a Colonel.
He went on to receive 2 Master degrees in 1971 and 1973 and then taught accounting for Allan Hancock College and retired at the age of 74.
Howard and Fran shared a love of travel. He also enjoyed gardening, politics, and history, but his greatest love was reserved for his family; we loved him as much as he loved us.
There will a Celebration of Howard's Life on Friday, April 24, at 11 o'clock at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Mission Hills. Everyone is invited to a luncheon at the family home after the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to either the local Food Bank or Braille Institute Library Services, 741 N Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, 90029-3594.
