Memorial services for Irene G. Challenger, 90, of Lompoc, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, 925 North F Street in Lompoc.
Irene was born March 20, 1920 in Peterborough, England to Joseph and Laurel Middleton Bend. In her teens, she loved to cycle and rode Mopeds throughout her life. She moved to the United States in 1946 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Irene married Jack Challenger during his service with the British Royal Air Force and became a world traveler. She lived in Spain, Australia, Africa, and England. She settled in Lompoc in 1978. Irene belonged to the Red Hat Society, Lompoc Dames and Sassy Ladies, Valley of the Flowers Half Century Club, and Lompoc Senior Nutritional Center. She was a big sports fan and especially liked soccer and tennis.
She died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Lompoc Valley Medical Center.
Survivors include her nephews Michael Warden of Guilford, West Australia and Ian Warden of Bryanston Republic of South Africa, and sister in law Brenda Hedger of Mitcham Surrey, England.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Laurel Muriel Warden.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Lompoc Senior Center, c/o City of Lompoc Parks & Recreation Dept., 125 West Walnut Ave., Lompoc.
Cremation arrangements are in the care of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
