Obituary

Ivan D. Brough, Husband, Dad and Papa, died on July 29, 2021, in Lompoc, CA.  He was born in Grover City on November 23, 1944.  He attended local schools and graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 1962.  Ivan attended Allan Hancock College briefly, where he met Glenda Signorelli.  They dated and were married on October 16, 1966.

Ivan joined the United States Air Force in 1966, where he served until 1970.  He was stationed in several locations, with his last assignment being in Biloxi, MS.  After his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, Ivan and Glenda settled in Santa Maria.  It is there that they raised their family and Ivan went to work for Conoco Oil.  He worked his entire career there, through a number of ownership changes, and ultimately retired from Greka Petroleum. Ivan was known for his mechanical abilities and was the "go-to" person for instrumentation issues at work.

Ivan took his vows of "sickness and health" very seriously and was by Glenda's side through 33 years of marriage and until her death in 1999.  After Glenda's death, Ivan moved to Nipomo.  He met Donna Fabela in 2005 and they were married on May 28, 2011.  They subsequently moved to Lompoc and were living there at the time of his death.

One cannot talk about Ivan without talking about his love of motorcycles and cars.  If you were a friend or family member you weren't described by your physical characteristics or your address.  Rather, it went something like this, "You know, Joe.  The one who drives the blue 1975 Buick with the 455 in it".  Because of this, all three of Ivan's children were raised with a healthy appreciation for anything that is powered by an engine.  In retirement, Ivan could usually be found tinkering in his workshop and working on "projects" that were collected.  Motorcycles, dune buggies, engines and a collection of tools were always at the ready to keep him occupied.

Ivan was also known by his children and grandchildren to always have a pocketknife with him that was always ready in case anyone needed it.  Ivan and his knife were particularly helpful for birthdays and Christmas celebrations when toys needed to be removed from their difficult packaging. The pocketknife was called upon countless times over the years and, in fact, he had one in the last pair of pants he wore.

Ivan also enjoyed camping and spending time with friends and family.  Although a man of few words, there was never any doubt that you were loved and that he would help in instant, if he had the ability.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Donna Fabela of Lompoc.  He was Dad to and is survived by his children, Heather Bennett of Phoenix, AZ, Shane Brough of Phoenix, AZ, and Corey Brough (Shannon) of Santa Maria and by his step-children Daniel (Susie) Fabela, and David (Irene) Fabela, all of Lompoc.  Ivan was Papa to and is survived by grandchildren Micah Brough, Caleb Brough, Kendall Brough, and step-grandchildren Braden Gray, Hailey Presley, Rosie Brown, Morgan Brown, Toryn Brown, Ben Fabela, Mason Fabela, Jael Fabela, and Kayla Fabela.  He is also survived by his sister, Sheila Curten and husband, Donald, of Santa Maria.

Ivan was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Glenda Brough, parents, Verl and Dorothy Brough, and brother, Michael Brough.

By now you are probably asking yourself, "What about services?".  Well, if you knew Ivan, you know that he would be just fine with no big hullabaloo being made over him.  He often said that he could just be propped up in the backyard and that would be just fine with him because "It is, what it is".  If you know his family, you know that isn't going to happen.  There will be a celebration of life at a future date so we can gather to enjoy good food, good drink, good stories and probably some laughter and tears.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
