Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Rice Campbell on Monday, March 18, 2024. Born on November 27, 1934, in Lompoc, California to Veril and Gertrude Campbell, James epitomized leadership, service, and unwavering dedication throughout his life's journey. His departure leaves a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. James leaves behind a legacy illuminated by integrity, kindness, and profound love.

James's journey was one marked by significant accomplishments, beginning with his leadership roles in high school. As President of both the Freshman and Senior Classes and later as Student Body President, he demonstrated his natural aptitude for guiding and inspiring others. His tenure as the state president of the California Future Farmers of America brought him numerous accolades, recognizing his excellence in both scholastic pursuits and extracurricular endeavors.

Despite humble beginnings, growing up without electricity, telephone, or indoor plumbing, James thrived. He spent his formative years working diligently on the family farm and dairy, learning the value of hard work, perseverance, and resilience. As the third of four children, he embraced the challenges of rural life with determination and grace, laying the foundation for the remarkable journey that lay ahead.

On November 16, 1953, James entered into marriage with the love of his life, Roberta Linderholm. They were later sealed in the St. George, Utah Temple. Graduating in Agri-Business from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he embarked on a distinguished career with Bank of America, spanning over three decades. Rising to the position of Senior Vice President, James cherished the relationships he cultivated with individuals across the state, leaving an indelible mark on all he encountered.

A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, James found solace and purpose in his faith and community, tirelessly serving others. His passion for life manifested in his love for the outdoors, as he delighted in hunting, gardening, and meticulously documenting family history.

James is survived by his wife, Roberta Ann Linderholm, a steadfast companion who stood by his side through life's triumphs and tribulations. He was a cherished father to his children: Daniel Campbell (Peggy), Greg Campbell (Debbie), Brenda Campbell, Angela Higgenbotham (Richard), Ken Campbell (Danelle), and Keith Campbell.

His enduring legacy extends to his 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, who brought him boundless joy and pride. Their lives are forever enriched by the love, guidance, and wisdom he imparted. Though James may have departed this earthly realm, his memory will endure in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, inspiring them to honor his legacy by embodying his virtues of love, kindness, and resilience.

Funeral services to celebrate the remarkable life of James Rice Campbell will be held on March 29, 2024, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel, located at 212 E. Central Avenue in Lompoc.  Visitation will begin at 9:00am. The funeral services will begin at 10:00am, with a luncheon following the service, and interment to follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
