Obituary

Jim was born February 19, 1929, in Berwyn, Illinois. He was the high school sports star, excelling in football, baseball, basketball and track. After high school he joined the Army, serving as a medic in both Korea and Vietnam.

In 1971, upon retirement from the Army, he brought his family to Lompoc remembering it from when he was stationed here at Camp Cook. He went to work as a med tech at the Federal Penitentiary and retired after 20-plus years. During that time he obtained an associate's degree through Allan Hancock College.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; fishing, a good book, a good meal, 7-11 coffee, good vino and of course a nice car. Until the last few years he rarely missed a day at the gym and was a frequent visitor at the library. He loved to pick and eat prickly pears and was always in search of a good patch. It was during one those searches he spotted the elusive black deer. He became obsessed. He loved a good adventure and experienced many. He was a gentle, generous soul and would give you the shirt off his back. He could charm you with his mesmerizing smile and clever wit. He was an excellent joke and story teller.

Jim passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the age of 83 in San Diego.

He is survived by his daughter Marcella (Marcy) and older sister Anne. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Ruth on July 4, 2008, and his daughter Anne on February 11, 1980. He will be laid to rest with both of them at Lompoc Cemetery. He requested no service be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VIVA or any Veterans charity.
