James Vincent Flaharty passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at the age of 79 after courageously battling a long illness. Jim is survived by his wife Linda of 36 years, sons James a Flaharty, Robert S. Brown (Tammy), daughters Margaret A. Kidney, Denise E. Flaharty (Lou), Deanna L. Curran (Kevin), brother Patrick J. Flaharty, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Sara L. Flaharty, brothers William E. Flaharty (Lucy), John P. Flaharty, Jr. (Patti), and sister-in-law Margaret B. Flaharty.
Jim was born on December 26, 1937 at Mills Hospital in San Mateo, California. He was raised on Madrone Avenue in the West Portal neighborhood of San Francisco and graduated from Archbishop Riordan High School in 1955 after attending St. Cecelia School. In 1963, Jim received a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of California, San Francisco.
He began his career at Dessel: s Pharmacy and for many years, owned and managed B&M Drug Store in the heart of San Francisco's financial district at Bush and Montgomery Streets. Subsequently, Jim moved to Sonoma County to continue his profession and his journey led him to Bakersfield where he oversaw the western region of pharmacies for Rite-Aid, ultimately retiring in Lompoc. Jim loved his profession and was extremely proud to have received commendations from the State of California and the University of California, San Francisco for fifty years of service as a pharmacist.
In 1980, Jim moved to Sonoma County where he met Linda. They were married at Armstrong Grove in Guerneville a year later. Shortly thereafter, Jim and Linda relocated to central California, and then moved to Lompoc where they made their home.
He was very social and active, a great man who deeply loved his family. He enjoyed fishing (especially with his son) in Alaska, traveling, jazz jubilees, and outscoring Linda at cribbage. Jim will be remembered as a strong, loving, and dependable with a quick wit, magnanimous personality and always with a twinkle in his eye.
Mass will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 10:00 am at La Purisima Concepcion Church, 213 West Olive Avenue, Lompoc, California 93436. A Celebration of Life will follow at La Botte Restaurant, 812 N. H Street, Lompoc, California.
