Obituary

James Stanley Foley
April 27, 1931 – December 10, 2008

Jim Foley was born April 27, 1931 in Kingsland, Arkansas to Robert and Stella Foley.

Jim began his aeronautical career as a sheet metal mechanic for Convair in 1952. He also worked for Air Research, and Martin Marietta on the Titan I and Titan II missile programs. Jim retired from ITT Federal Electric in 1993 where his talents were sought after and highly respected.

He and his family moved to Lompoc in 1965 where his desire to become a pilot was realized. He rebuilt his first airplane in the garage of his home and required a police escort while he moved the plane to the Lompoc airport. He was an accomplished pilot prior to earning his private pilot's license in 1975. He avidly shared his passion for flight with family and friends. Jim participated in the Young Eagles, which provided young children the opportunity to experience powered flight. Through this he relived his first 50-cent flight as a boy in an open biplane. Jim was the chairman of the Lompoc Airport Commission. He served as Secretary of EAA Chapter 275 and the Treasurer of the West Coast Cub Fly In Association. He was also a member of the Lompoc Valley Pilots Association.

Jim always enjoyed playing Santa Claus about town and for his grandchildren. He was very convincing for a man who weighed on average of 140 lbs.

He was preceded in death by his wife Allean, sisters Myrna and Barbara and grandchildren Corey and Timmy Howell. He is survived by his wife Pat and children; Brenda Foley and James Foley and wife, Tove Aase, of Lompoc, Vivian Janiak and husband, Robert, of Colorado Springs, Elizabeth Broach and husband, Mike of Nashville, and his stepsons Sean and Kevin O'Hara. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His surviving siblings are Dorothy, Reginald, Marion, David, Margaret, Mary Ellen and Clara.

Our father, husband, teacher, mentor, and friend died doing what he loved.

His family requests that donations be made to the Young Eagles Program in lieu of flowers:
