James Howard arrived in this world on November 6, 1935, in Walton, Kentucky and departed on December 13, 2013. He was the tenth of eleven children born to Richard and Lula Howard.
Jim left early in his senior year of high school to join the United States Air Force. During his time in the military he met his beloved wife Dorothy. They were married on May 12, 1957. In September of 1958, their only child Michael was born. The family moved to Lompoc in June of 1961.
After leaving the Air Force in 1962, he went back to school and received his G. E. D. and quickly had a job as assistant director of the original Lompoc Boy's Club. Jim loved kids and at the Boy's Club he would help them achieve new goals and have fun doing it. At the same time he started coaching baseball and soon kids from all over town knew of him. He became the director of the Boy's Club in the late 1960s and was nominated for Man of the Year in 1968.
In 1972 he received his associate's degree and bachelor's degree and started working for the Santa Barbara County Welfare Department; all this time he still was coaching baseball. Jim coached several all-star teams and had some players play at the professional level. Anybody who played baseball in Lompoc from the 1960s to the late 1990s knew of Jim Howard.
He started working as a painter for the civil service in 1980 and retired in 2000. One of the biggest joys of his life was the birth of his granddaughter Summer in 1988. He loved to go fishing and play golf, also pitching horseshoes. He would always put smiles on people's faces with his sense of humor and was a great story teller.
Jim leaves behind his son Mike, daughter-in-law Anna, granddaughter Summer, sister June and brother Ross, and lots of memories and laughter of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his sisters Virginia, Flora, Florence, Pauline and Mary; his brothers Dick, Sam and Paul; his father Richard and mother Lula.
The funeral service will be on Saturday, December 28, at 1pm at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 4600 Harris Grade Road in Lompoc.
