Obituary

Janet Marie Begg was surrounded by her family when she died peacefully on May 12 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on Feb 13, 1925, in Los Angeles, California to parents Lester Lawson and Leona Osborn, their second daughter.

She moved from the L.A. area to Lompoc in April 1940, and graduated from Lompoc High School in 1944. Upon graduation she went to work at the Southern Pacific Rail Road as a freight clerk. LeRoy Begg was head driver for passenger and freight delivery also for Southern Pacific Rail Road. Soon they dated and married in 1946.

Together they had three sons – Lester, John, James and step son R. Wayne Begg.

Janet was active with her sons' activities at La Purisima School as well as Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and City Youth Swim Team. For years, she was the chairperson for the La Purisima School entries in the Flower Festival Parade. We will miss Janet's persistent "Letters to the Editor" whenever the Cross Hill lights were not lit.

Her hobbies included refinishing and restoring antique furniture, collecting porcelain figurines, antique dolls and leaded glass. She enjoyed playing cards and gardening. Janet won many top awards at the Alpha Club Flower Show for her specimens. She was a true animal lover.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Helen Lubin, her husband LeRoy in 2006 and her son John in 2011.

She is survived by her son Lester (Quinette) in San Diego; daughter-in-law Brenda Begg of Lompoc, son James (Paula) of Truckee California, step-son R. Wayne (Diane) of Diamond Bar California, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family members Richard and Matthew Schankel.
