Obituary

Jerome Leo Hogan passed away on May 7, 2019, in Portland, Oregon, after visiting relatives in that city. He was born on October 5, 1937, in Streator, Illinois, to Nellie and Bernard Hogan.

Jerome graduated from Streator High School in 1956 and was employed at the grocery store and a movie theater. He then joined the Air Force in October of 1956 and was stationed in England for a few years. This led to his becoming a career fire fighter. After his discharge from the United States Air Force, he entered the same field as he joined, the Federal Civil Service Fire Department at Vandenberg Air Force Base, eventually retiring after 31 years as a Fire Fighter. During his first year at Vandenberg, he met and married Nancy Wurster, a teacher in the Lompoc School District, in August of 1963. They had two boys, Tim and Mike. Jerry was always fully involved in his sons' activities all through their school age years as an assistant or a coach or whatever was needed in Boy Scouts, Little League, youth football, PTA, and so on. He also enjoyed his participation with the Elks youth activities, Lompoc Running Club, Bounder RV Camping club, PCPA Ushers and the Elks RV Camping Club. After retiring from the fire department, he became a CIF referee and then a CIF track starter. When his grandchildren came along and joined their many activities, he continued volunteering for them, too, as long as he could.

Survivors include wife Nancy, son Tim and wife Abby, Grandson Satchel, son Mike and wife Linda, grandchildren Jack, Emily and Dylan, brother in law Steve Wurster, many beloved nieces and nephews in Iowa and Idaho, and his adopted "brother" Jay Jure and his family.

Services will be held Saturday, June 1, at 11 AM in the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel. A reception will follow at the Elks Lodge #2274 in Lompoc. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Special Olympics, 15 E. Carrillo Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
