Obituary

On June 1, 1988, in the beautiful city of Santa Barbara, the world welcomed Jesi Rae Bender—a shining star who would go on to touch countless lives with her vibrant spirit and compassionate heart. It is with heavy hearts that we now honor her memory, as she left us too soon on November 8, 2024, at the age of 36, while residing in Lompoc.

Jesi was the self-proclaimed "queen of puns" and undoubtedly the life of any party. Her sense of humor and lively presence were infectious, lighting up the room and leaving everyone else smiling. Beyond her ability to make people laugh, Jesi had a gift for connection—her openness, and vulnerability drew people to her in a way that made everyone feel seen and understood.

Her greatest accomplishments reflected her dedication to community and advocacy. From her early days as a cheerleader and the 2006 LHS student body president, Jesi rose to become a powerful advocate for the California Teachers Association. She was a mentor and a beacon of support for those facing partner abuse, mental health struggles, medical gaslighting against women, and alcoholism. Her impact was profound, making her a cherished ally and guide for so many, some of whom had never even met her in person.

Jesi leaves behind a loving family who will forever keep her memory alive in their hearts. She is survived by her devoted parents, Cara and Anthony Uribe, her brother Alex Uribe, her precious children—Hunter, Savannah, Cooper, and Mackenzie Bender, and by her best friend and devoted husband Martin Bender. They, along with countless friends, will cherish the warmth she brought to their lives.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lompoc's Elks Club on December 8th where family and friends will gather together to remember the joy and love Jesi shared with all around her. As we reflect on Jesi's life, may we find comfort in her own words penned before her passing: "I'm so grateful for the life I've lived and the people I have shared it with. I know that no matter what happens, I will always be with them." Her legacy of laughter, advocacy, and unconditional love will live on, reminding us to embrace each moment, and each other, with the same openness and fearlessness that she did.
