IN LOVING MEMORY OF
J.F. "Jeff"
Brewton
July 25, 1935 – July 5, 2023
JF Brewton, better known as Jeff F Brewton, was a local school teacher at Hapgood Elementary School in Lompoc. He taught 6th grade and Math Honors then ended his teaching career as a Special Education Teacher at La Cañada Elementary School 26 years later. He retired in 1990 and remained here in Lompoc close to his family until his passing. He enjoyed his grandkids calling them his "Little Angels" saying they could do no wrong! (Anjele & Faith Hurtado, Audrey & Jeffrey S Brewton) who he loved to spoil making his two kids (Lezlee J Hurtado, Jeffrey L Brewton) and daughter-in-law (Laura Brewton) just shake their heads at him. Jeff was what you would call a "Book Worm" and that's normally how you would find him in the evenings reading about one of his many interests. During the day he was a "Jack of all Trades" fixing or creating something in his garage.
Jeff F Brewton was born on July 25th, 1935, in Lake Arthur New Mexico on the family farm during the Great Depression. His two sisters (Pearl Wright & Cora Heaberlin) were also born in New Mexico with him. After several years of back-to-back flooding of the farm, they were forced to move out to Taft, California, staying with family to help get them on their feet. A short time later they moved in with family members on the Brewton side in Tulare, California where his last two siblings were born (Charles & Dean Brewton). Jeff was 8 years old during the move and World War II was in its height. He finished his elementary schooling there in Tulare and joined his father in a new job down in Lancaster, California. (Juel Brewton) took over the Railway Express office in Lancaster with Jeff helping him after school and on weekends. Railway Express was an old type of UPS that shipped items on rail cars to the nearest office and then delivered it with delivery trucks that look like the UPS trucks of today. Once settled they bought a house and his mother (Elizabeth Brewton) brought down the rest of the family six months later. Jeff graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 1953 and continued his education going to the Antelope Valley Junior College there in Lancaster for the next two years. He got a job at the local 5 and Dime store where he met his future wife (Nancy Ann Smith). Nancy graduated first and transferred to San Jose State College where he followed the next year. Both pursuing degrees in education and getting their teaching credentials. Jeff continued his education there at San Jose State and by 1959, he took a semester off and was drafted for two years by the United States Army for Vietnam. He was stationed in New Orleans at a test facility for incoming personnel into the armed forces. Jeff issued tests to the men for job placement in the armed forces. After his two years in the Army, he finished up his schooling and both he and Nancy got teaching jobs with the Lompoc Unified School District. They bought their one and only house in 1964 making Lompoc their new home.
Jeff's family would like to thank VNA Health for making his transition so much better. The Grief Recovery Group through the Lompoc Senior Center that gave him a family which he loved to go out to eat with after their meetings. All the love and support from lifelong neighbors, friends, and family we have received during this time! God bless you all!
Jeff's memorial service will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 10:30 am at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
