JAMES ANTHONY MENDEZ
James "Jim" A. Mendez, age 60, passed away July 21, 2010, after a long illness. He was born in Oxnard, California on November 23, 1949, the fourth of six children born to George and Florence Mendez (now deceased.
The family moved to Lompoc in 1963. Jim graduated from Lompoc High School in 1967. His passion for working with cars began early on and influenced his life's direction. As a youth he was driving and working with vehicles on the farm where his father worked. His experience in his high school shop classes and natural ability working with all things mechanical enabled him to get his first job working as a mechanic. During the Vietnam War, he was drafted into the army and served his country by driving and maintaining military vehicles.
Always willing to lend a helping hand where he could, it was his kindness that prompted him to stop and help a young woman whose car had broken down on the side of the road. She became his beloved wife of 26 years. Together, Stella and Jim had three beautiful children. He supported his family and enjoyed his work as an auto mechanic and smog technician in Santa Barbara County for 30 years. He worked hard and was greatly appreciated by many in the community. In addition to his love for automobiles he also enjoyed family gatherings, eating good food, and was very proud of his Portuguese heritage. He was also a big fan of drag racing. Jim was greatly devoted to his family and was always there for them with love and adoration.
Jim is survived by his wife of 26 years, Stella, sons Tony and David, daughter Nichole, brothers George (Lori) of Nipomo, John (Carmella) of Panama, Jerry (Dione) of Atascadero, Joe (Val) of Auberry, and sister Joanne (Steve) Schuyler of Lompoc, and several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services will take place at La Purisima Catholic Church on Friday, July 30, 2010, at 10:00 am with Father Tom Cook officiating. The internment will follow the mass at the Lompoc Cemetery.
