Vigil services for Lompoc native Jimmy J. Romero, 85, will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at La Purisima Conception Catholic Church with Rev. Tom Cook officiating. Burial will follow at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
Jimmy was called to heaven by our Lord Tuesday, August 23, 2011.
Jimmy was born May 30, 1926 in Lompoc. He attended Lompoc High and was drafted into the Army during World War II in 1944. In the Philippine Islands with the 103rd Infantry Regiment, Jimmy was awarded the Bronze Star for heavy combat.
After returning home, Jimmy worked for the Division of Highways and later was hired on by the City of Lompoc where he remained for thirty years in the Solid Waste Department.
He is survived by daughters, Mary Lou Romero, Teresa (Tomas) Salinas, Linda (Dan) Gregoire and Connie Romero; sons, Larry Romero and Joe (Amber) Romero. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Connie and son Jim Jr.
Jimmy lived a full life and was passionate about country and baseball. Upon leaving the Army in 1946, Jimmy always had the flag on display at his home. His favorite saying was Lock N' Load which he heard in the Army before a mission started. J.R. loved baseball and was an avid Dodger fan. He played baseball as a youth and an adult along with coaching in Little League and Babe Ruth for over twenty years. His hobbies included fishing, ceramic work and painting. Now, Jimmy is at home with our Lord.
Visitation hours will be 4 to 8 pm Wednesday at the mortuary.
