Obituary

Joan Margaret Perkins was surrounded by the love of her family as she took her final breaths on February 4, 2014.

Joan was born in London, England on October 7, 1933. As a young girl, she and her siblings were evacuated from London due to the bombs of World War II. The whole family was reunited after the war. Joan graduated from school and became a seamstress when she met Forrest D. Perkins, a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. They married and had two children. They lived in many states during his career in the Air Force. In 1965 they settled in Santa Barbara, California following his retirement. Joan worked as an electronic assembler for 30 years at Applied Magnetics and Joslyn Electronics. She became a widow after her husband passed away in 1990. However, Joan was lucky to find love again. She met Douglas Smith (Santa Maria) and found the new love of her life. They shared many years of happiness together, traveling the world, going on cruises and many road trips. Their love was undeniable. She loved spending time with her family, going to thrift stores, playing bingo and buying endless amounts of gifts for her family on Christmas; it was her favorite time of year. We will miss her love for life, her beautiful smile, her extremely caring heart and her generosity for others. Joan's children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was the best Nana ever.

She is preceded in death by her parents Mathilda & Ernest Smith and her brother Sid.

Joan leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her daughter Sherree (Robert) Morris and son Forrest "Bud" Perkins "the one she loved the most", her sisters Doris, Irene (Dick) Sorenson, Pam and brothers Ernie and John Smith. She leaves behind her grandchildren Nicole (Cesar) Dominguez, Michele (Andy) Morris, Bobby (Melissa) Morris, Daniel Morris, Jeffrey Morris and Michael Wolf, her great-grandchildren Robert, Ethan, Brandon and newest addition Cesar Junior and most of all her beloved spouse, Doug Smith.

We love you Nana, we will never forget you. You are truly an angel.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Visitation hours will be from noon until service time at the mortuary. Private burial will be at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
