Obituary

Joan Schlaffer, 92, a resident of Woodland, California, for 10 years, passed away peacefully at 5:40 a.m. on June 13 of natural causes under the attentive care of Yolo Hospice and the staff at The Californian Assisted Living and Dementia Care.

She was born on July 19, 1922 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to Joseph and Mary Parent and was raised in Racine, Wisconsin. Joan was the youngest of five children and her siblings included Margaret, Daniel, Roderick and Rosemary.

She met her future husband, Joseph Schlaffer, while working as a seamstress at the Badger Shirt Factory and they were married on May 1, 1948. Their two children, Steve and Mary were born in Wisconsin before moving to Lompoc, California, in 1960.

Joan was an active parishioner at La Purisima Catholic Church in Lompoc, California, volunteering her time at the church and school and making lifelong friendships with many dear friends. Joan loved seeing her children and six grandchildren during the holidays and summer vacations; shopping and having lunch with her sister Margaret and her daughters and granddaughters; dinners at the Lompoc Elks Lodge with family and friends; visits to the beach and playing cribbage; playing cards, reading, and entertaining friends in her home.

Following her husband's death in 1995, Joan eventually moved to Woodland, California, in 2004.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; sisters, Margaret Shearer and Rosemary Lange; and brothers, Daniel Parent and Roderick Parent. Joan is survived by her son, Stephen Schlaffer and his wife Debbie of Kerrville Texas, her daughter Mary Chapman and her husband James of Woodland, California, grandchildren Joseph Schlaffer and his wife Amy of Houston, Texas, John Schlaffer and his wife Terri of Midland, Texas, James Schlaffer of Norman, Oklahoma, Jeanne Pullin and her husband Aaron of San Antonio, Texas, Michelle Chapman of Sherman, Texas, Richard Chapman of Woodland, California, and six great grandchildren.

A funeral Mass at La Purisima Church in Lompoc California is scheduled at 10:00 AM on September 25th with graveside services to follow at Lompoc Cemetery. Starbuck-Lind Mortuary in Lompoc, California, is providing funeral services with assistance from Kraft Brothers Mortuary in Woodland, California. 028 In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Yolo Hospice or La Purisima Concepción Catholic School in Lompoc California.
