Services for Joe M. Cornejo, 84, of Lompoc, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Burial will follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
Joe , the oldest of eight children, was born January 14, 1923 in San Bernardino, Calif. to Jose and Maria Martinez Cornejo. He was a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served his country in France and Germany during World War II with the 822nd Tank Destroyer Battalion "The Hellcats." Joe lived the majority of his life in Lompoc and worked as a heavy equipment operator with the Operating Engineers for 35 years before retiring in the 1980's. He was a 38 year member of the Lompoc Elks Lodge #2274. One of Joe's greatest joys was the time he spent with his grandson Michael Pedotti.
He died Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at Lompoc Hospital.
Survivors include his children, Paul Rice, Terri Dufrene, Rick Cornejo, Larry Cornejo, Linda Cornejo and Danny Cornejo; brothers, Ruben Conejo, and Gilbert Conejo; sisters, Cora Lopez, Carmen Medina, Rose Valadez, and Alice Contreras; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Molly, who died in 1990 and sister, Betty Alvarado who died in 2003.
Visitation hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary.
