John Anthony Bortugno of Lompoc died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the age of 93.
John was born December 1, 1916, in Summit, New Jersey to Frank and Maria Bortugno. He was raised and educated in Litchfield, Connecticut and attended Litchfield High School before joining the United States Army. He served in the Pacific theatre during World War II.
John brought his family to California, and settled in Alhambra. He worked for the City of Pasadena as a horticulturist in charge of the gardening at Pasadena City Hall. He retired to Fallbrook and in 2004 moved to Lompoc.
John was a member of the Sons of Italy. He enjoyed spending time in his garden.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years Hella Bortugno of Lompoc, son Frank Bortugno and his wife Sharon of Oakhurst, California, son Edward Bortugno and his wife Angela of Napa, California, daughter Mary Ohngren and her husband Jim of Clarkston, Michigan, son John A. Bortugno, Jr. of Huntington Beach, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and his sister Elizabeth Nelson of Providence, Rhode Island.
The visitation will be on Wednesday, July 28, from 4-8 pm, with the evening vigil starting at 7pm in the chapel of the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Father Tom Cook will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 29, at 10 am at La Purisima Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
