IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Arthur
Bruening
August 21, 1942 – October 6, 2023
John Bruening, a true Baby Boomer, was born in Missouri in 1942 to his parents Lorraine and Arthur Bruening. He was the middle child, with an older brother, Richard, and a younger sister, Janice. The family eventually made their way to California, settling in the Los Angeles area.
In his youth, John shared stories of adventure, like "borrowing" hubcaps or maybe even a car, which may or may not have landed him in trouble.
At the age of 17, he joined the Marine Corps, joking that he was "sold" by his mother, embarking on a lifelong journey of public service. He served 11 years in the Corps, seeing combat in the Vietnam War not once, but twice. During his second tour in Vietnam, he was recognized for his gallantry with a Silver Star, the United States' third-highest award. He left the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant.
After three years in civilian life, John decided to re-enlist, this time with the United States Air Force. He served another 12 years, retiring in 1985 as a Senior Master Sergeant.
His dedication to service continued as he took a civil service job as a contracting/finance officer at Vandenberg, working until his retirement in 2008.
John's personal life was filled with complexity, including two marriages. From these relationships, he became the proud parent of John, Richard, Lorraine, Dawn, Shelby, and Angela.
Later in life, he found his true soulmate, Maria, whose love brought joy and stability to his life. They were married in 1978. Their love story was like something out of a romantic comedy, with dancing and hand-holding always in the script.
After the loss of their first child, Andrea, John and Maria welcomed the birth of their son, Brice, in 1986.
Beyond his family and work, John had many passions. He was an avid fisherman, a car enthusiast, and enjoyed performing karaoke. He was an active member of the Queen of Angels church community, serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also engaged in the Filipino American Club of Lompoc.
John Bruening left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a deep commitment to service, both to his community and his country. His life was a remarkable journey, filled with adventure and dedication to making the world a better place. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
