John Truman McCaslin, of Lompoc, CA passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020 due to
complications of cancer at age 77.
John was preceded in death by his parents Ivan and Della McCaslin, and his beloved wife Ellen.
He is survived by his three children John (Gilberta) Bittman Jr, Carol (Dennis Lucas) Ingle, and
Sean (Jolene) McCaslin. His granddaughters Kristin, Elizabeth and Ellen Ingle. His sisters
Audrey (James) Nagy, Judith Berrington, Karen (Kenneth) Ambroz. His brothers Marvin
(Louise) McCaslin, Douglas (Karen) McCaslin, Kevin (DeeDee) McCaslin. Brothers-in-law
Charles (Ann) Bockius, George (Judith) Bockius, and his many nieces and nephews across the
country.
John was born at his parent's home in Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania, and moved with the family
to Lorain, Ohio as a young child. John attended Clearview High School, and eventually
graduated from Oberlin College. He was very active in athletics and excelled in football. (He
was inducted into Oberlin College's Heisman Club at their 50th Anniversary in 2013). After
college, he spent time in the Chicago, Illinois area before returning home to Ohio, where his
family would introduce him to his future wife Ellen (nee Bockius) Bittman. John and Ellen were
married in October of 1972. In 1984, John and Ellen moved to California where he ultimately
worked as a dispatcher and jailor for the Lompoc Police Department until his retirement.
At his request, there will not be a formal viewing or ceremony. John will be cremated by
Starbuck-Lind Mortuary with plans to eventually be interred with his wife Ellen at Lompoc
Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 3-7pm at the
Lompoc Elks Lodge.
