Obituary
John James McKelvey of Lompoc died peacefully on February 29, 2016 at the Lompoc Skilled and Rehab Nursing Center. He was 82.
John was born on February 24, 1934 in Philadelphia, one of 11 children born to Anna (Mulligan) Mc Kelvey and Thomas McKelvey. John was a proud alumnus of West Philadelphia Catholic Boys High School and Temple University, where he earned and engineering degree.
He later lived in Burlington, Iowa, Lompoc and Denver before returning to Lompoc to stay in about 1990. He worked as an engineer at Vandenberg Air Force Base until retirement.
John loved to talk about his Irish heritage and regularly attended La Purisima Catholic Church. He enjoyed listening to talk radio, eating See's Candies and driving his 1978 black Buick Regal. His hobbies included oil painting and making pizza (a skill he developed while running a restaurant as a young man). He also adored dogs and had a knack for befriending neighborhood cats.
John was the proud father of two daughters, Sara McKelvey Schocklin and her husband, Phillip of Deptford, N. J. and Meghan McKelvey and her husband, Nick Erlandson of West Sacramento. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Phillip, Eric, Tyler and Jason Schocklin, sisters and brothers, and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will take place on Sunday April 10, 2016 at 4:00 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel with a Rosary at 6:00 pm. Funeral service is on Monday April 11, 2016 at 10:30 am at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
