John F. Porter of Lompoc died on Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the age of 74, after a long battle with a blood disorder.
He was born June 15, 1933, in Denver, Colorado to George and Mary Porter. He served honorably in the U.S. Army Band during the Korean War. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and a master's degree in music education from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
After moving to Santa Barbara in 1959, he worked as a music therapist at Deveraux School. He taught in the Lompoc Unified School District as band and orchestra director for the Lompoc Valley Middle School for 37 years. He played in the Solvang Town Band for thirty years and was also active with the Santa Ynez Valley Wind Ensemble. In addition he played and served on the founding board of the Lompoc Pops. He owned the Music Box, a music store in Lompoc during the 1970s.
John Porter volunteered for many organizations including those that helped the homeless. He served on the board of Vista Hills Mutual Water Company, on the musician's scholarship committee for The Santa Barbara Foundation, and in his early years in the area he served on the Bishop's Committee at Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, and later as Senior Warden at St. Mark's in-the-Valley.
John Porter was a loving husband and devoting father to his three children and a caring foster parent to many others. Survivors include Lynn, his wife of 49 years, daughters Sally Hoffman of Agoura Hills and Maggie Mesikep of Los Olivos, son John Charles Porter of Lompoc, and grandchildren Rebecca and Amanda Hoffman and Hannah Grace Mesikep.
Services will be held at St. Mark's in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, 2901 Nojoqui Avenue in Los Olivos on Friday, August 10, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Charles Stacy will officiate. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard.
