It is with great sorrow that the family of John "Jack" Sawyer announce the passing of our beloved father on March 21, 2024.
Jack was born to parents Theodore Sawyer MD and Elizabeth Morgan Sawyer on June 25, 1930 in Logan, Ohio. He graduated from Crestline High School in 1948 and Ohio University in Athens in 1952 with a BA degree in Biology. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1956 with an MD from the College of Medicine.
In 1956 he worked as an intern at San Diego County Hospital, and this is when he met and married his wife, Lillian in August 1957.
In 1957 shortly after getting married at St. Bridges Catholic Church in San Diego, the couple moved to Seattle, WA where he was inducted into the US Navy as Lt. Senior Grade. He served 2 years of active duty, one year as medical officer aboard the USS Mitchell, and a 2nd year at the Dispensary on Pier 91 in Seattle.
In 1959 Jack and Lillian moved to Akron, Ohio, where he started a surgical residency. He completed his surgical residency in Youngstown, Ohio at St. Elizabeth Hospital. While in Ohio, their son David was born in Akron and John was born in Youngstown.
Upon completion of Jack's residency in General Surgery, the family moved back to California in 1963. The family settled in Lompoc, CA where Jack set up his medical practice in 1963. The family was complete with the arrival of daughter Diane who was born in Lompoc in 1965.
During his 40 years of practice, he served in various hospital capacities including Chief of Staff. He was a member of the CA Medical Society, CMA, and AMA. He retired from the practice of medicine in 1997.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian, parents, and sisters Elizabeth Ettaki and Jean Biggs. He is survived by children, David B Sawyer, John M Sawyer, Diane M Dietrich (Sawyer); grandchildren, Jacqueline Krallman, Amanda Paige, Matthew Sawyer, Ryan Krallman, John Krallman, Jessica Sawyer, Christina Sawyer; brother, Ted Sawyer of Columbus Ohio, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for April 5, 2024, at 10 am in the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary 123 North A Street, Lompoc. Interment to follow at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
