Obituary

We lost our sweet Johnny November 28, 2016. He was surrounded by family when the lord decided he needed him. He left behind his loving family; brother William, dear friend and mother of his children Muriel Sumter, daughters and their husbands, Peggie Sumter, Janelle Anaya (Jorge) and Sandra Jones (Harold). He was also loved dearly by 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. John was born February 12, 1923, at the Union 76 Oil Company Hospital in Orcutt, California, to George Luther and Katherine Mary Sumter. John's family moved to Lompoc in 1932. As part of a carpentry class in high school, he helped build a few homes in town. He also began working on cars and building jalopies. He graduated in 1941 and not long after served with the 736th Tank Battalion during WWII. After the war was over he returned to Lompoc and eventually started his career at Beattie Motors. For many people, he was the one to go to for advice on how to fix something. John met Muriel and they married in 1953. For fun, they would work on old cars and race them in southern California. Not too many years later they started their family. After the girls started getting older, one of John's best hobbies became antique tractors. John was a very proud and hardworking man and loved his family. He always tried to make sure his family was taken care of and put others before himself. He had strong beliefs in treating people right and fairly. John was preceded in death by his parents George Luther and Katherine, brother George and sister Mae. John will be greatly missed. Please join the Family for a memorial service on Saturday December 10th at 12:00 Noon at the Starbuck-Lind Chapel.
