John Franklin Surface, age 92 of Lompoc, passed away December 9, 2008. He was born May 18, 1916 in Charleston, West Virginia to John and Gladys Surface.
He was employed by Andersons' Inc. as an Equipment Superintendent for one of the largest highway construction companies in West Virginia and held similar duties at Burdettes' Paving and Road Construction. Various other employment included truck driver, heavy equipment operator, golf course grounds and maintenance manager, portable building sales, and manufacturing.
John was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, having served on the island of Guam. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and past member of the Fraternal Order of Police and UAW. He lived in Lompoc the last eleven years of his life.
He is survived by sons John David Surface of Long Beach, CA, Dennis F. Surface of Lompoc, CA, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Maxine Surface, and his daughter Emma Lee. He was also preceded in death by his sister Dorothy DeVoss and brothers Bill, Ben and Farley Surface.
Private family services will be held with interment to take place at a later date at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA.
