Obituary

John Earl Wilson of Lompoc, died Saturday, January 8, 2011, at the age of 80.

John was born April 6, 1930 in Arroyo Grande. Raised and educated in Arroyo Grande and Ventura his family moved to San Francisco in 1943.

As a young man he joined the US Army and later the US Air Force. He served in Japan where his first daughter was born, then at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento where his second daughter was born. He returned to Japan and was stationed at Yokota Air Force Base, then Vandenberg AFB, then Naha Air Force Base on Okinawa, then McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. There he submitted his retirement papers and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1972. He then drove family back across the country (at same time Rocky and Bullwinkle were making their trek)to make Lompoc his home.

John was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. The accompanying citation read, "Technical Sergeant John E. Wilson distinguished himself by meritorious service while serving as Procedures Technician, Procedures and Standardization Section, Management and Procedures Branch, 4392d Supply Squadron, Vandenberg AFB, California from 30 July 1967 to 6 September 1968. During this period he exhibited outstanding leadership, exemplary skill and ability in the professional accomplishments of his assigned duties. Through his diligent efforts and foresight he resolved the misuse and abuse of the Supply Priority System by implementation of new and revised procedures. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Wilson reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force."

John earned an Associates of Art degree from Hancock College in 1976. He was a letter carrier with the US Postal Service for 19 years. He enjoyed stamp collecting and bird watching at River Park.

John was preceded in death by his wife Reiko Wilson in 2008. He is survived by his daughters, Eleanor Wilson of Tehachapi and Emily Bronstein of La Mirada, his brother Ronald Wilson of Sebastopol and his sister Rita Rector of Pleasanton.

At his request no services will be held. Cremation will be followed by interment in the Bakersfield National Cemetery.
