IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Donald
Avila, Sr.
October 3, 1929 – January 30, 2022
Joseph Donald Avila Sr., a lifetime resident of Lompoc, passed away at his home on January 30, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Joseph was born October 3, 1929, to parents Antonio "Tony" Avila and Margaret (Silva) Avila. Joseph shared his childhood with sisters Adele, Marjorie, and brother John. He was a very active child and attended local schools. He graduated high school in 1947 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. During this time, he attended Navy engineering school and graduated second in his class.
Upon his return, he took over his father's business, Valley Welding and Machine shop. On July 30, 1960, he married his sweetheart Dorothy Avila at Santa Inez Mission church. They had five children, Joseph jr., Donna, Karen, Susan and Carol. In addition to working and raising a family, Joseph had many hobbies and interests which included winemaking, camping, traveling, fishing, family barbeques, playing horseshoes, and was an active member at La Purisima Catholic Church. He spent over 40 years perfecting his smoked turkey for Thanksgiving and making Pinot Noir for his friends and family.
Joseph was a wonderful person, always ready and willing to help others. He was a long-time member of the Odd Fellows and had recently received his 70-year Honorable Jewel award. In addition to this, he was also a long-time Elks member, a member of PFSA, Lompoc Historical Society, Cancer Society, and served on the Lompoc Cemetery Board for 33 years. He also enjoyed going on the annual Vaqueros ride and participating in horseshoe tournaments.
He was a very hardworking, intelligent, and loving man, always going above and beyond to care for his family. He was very proud of his children's accomplishments and enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He taught many of them car maintenance, how to fish, ride a bike, and spent many hours helping them with various projects. There was nothing he couldn't do or fix.
The loss of Joseph will be felt by many but especially his wife of 61 years, Dorothy.
A celebration of life will be planned for the future. In lieu of flowers, please donate to La Purisima Catholic School or the charity of your choice.
