Obituary

After 15 months of illness, Kiyo Saul of Lompoc passed away at home on Sunday night, March 9, 2014, attended by her three children.  She was 85 years old at the time of her death.

Kiyo was born on May 22, 1928, in Tokyo, Japan.  She was the third child and eldest daughter of Shiro and Riki Saito's six children; her mother's side of the family were of Samurai descent.  As a teenager, she survived the Doolittle air raids on Tokyo during the Second World War.  She met and married her husband, Charles Wayne Saul, when he visited Tokyo during the Korean War.  Her husband preceded her in death in 1992.

Kiyo was an Air Force wife who accompanied her husband to Edwards AFB, Misawa AFB in Japan, Vandenberg AFB, and Hickam AFB in Hawaii before retiring and taking up residence in Lompoc in 1971.

After her husband's death, Kiyo became an active and regular member of the Lompoc Half Century Club where she made a lot of new friends in their various line dancing classes.  Kiyo also enjoyed going on day trips to art museums, gardens, parks, and natural history museums.

Kiyo remained active and young at heart for many years, and up until quite recently enjoyed going to rock music concerts with her children.  She was a huge Beatles fan and even saw Paul McCartney perform three times and the Rolling Stones twice.  She also enjoyed Samurai action firms.  Kiyo encouraged her children to listen to rock and roll and become interested in art and literature.

Her family was of the greatest importance to Kiyo.  Family time and ties were more than just getting together for special occasions; it was significant in the daily passage of time.  She thought nothing of the selfless nature of her love for her children and did all that she could for them until the very end.  She kept in touch with her remaining brother Kenji Saito in Japan until his death in 2012.

Kiyo Saul is survived by her daughter, Patricia Saul, her sons, James and Robert Saul, all of Lompoc; and numerous nephews and nieces both in the United Stated and in Japan.

There will not be a memorial service in accordance with her wishes.  Those who wish to may contact her family at rememberkiyo@gmail.com
