Obituary

Larry Keith Blain was born on August 31st, 1943, in Grayville, IL, and entered the gates of Heaven on Sunday, June 4th, 2023, after a 6-year battle with cancer. His family moved to Texas when he was a young boy and he became a Boy Scout with a deep love for the outdoors. Larry graduated high school with the Class of 1962 in Premont, TX. He proudly served his country in the Army until 1964 and was stationed in Fort Hood, TX and Thailand. In 1966, Larry went to work for Exxon on the King Ranch gas plant in Kingsville, TX, transferring to the Tar Sands Project in LaPryor, TX, the Tom O-Connor gas plant in Refugio County, TX, and finally to Las Flores Canyon gas plant in California. He was a loyal employee, a plant mechanic and operator, for Exxon-Mobile for 30 years.

Always a respectful gentleman, a Christ follower, a Sunday school teacher, a Mason and member of the Masonic Lodge in Lompoc, CA. Larry loved country music and dancing. He enjoyed being on a tractor, farming and harvesting crops in South Texas. He taught his two children the love of camping, campfire cooking, floating Texas rivers, and leaving a campground better than you found it. Larry enjoyed taking long tours on his motorcycles over the years, but especially with his beloved wife, Sylvia. He enjoyed everything to do with rebuilding old cars and small engines. He loved a hot rod! Larry was an artist with many talents like oil painting and the dying art of whittling wood and antler jewelry and keychains with a pocketknife. He was an avid reader of old westerns and books about ships and sailing. He was a collector of too many things, a soft-spoken, storytelling Texan, with funny expressions and southern slang. Gentle, loving, thoughtful and kind. Nothing ruffled his feathers.

Larry was proceeded in death by his parents, William A. and Dollie D. Blain of Woodsboro, TX, his sister and brother-in-law, Rosetta and Bobby Swartz of Premont, TX, and brother-in-law Charles P. Mayhall II of OrangeGrove, TX. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Blain of Lompoc, CA, his sister Carol A. Mayhall of Orange Grove, TX, and brother Danny R. Blain of Woodsboro, TX. He is also survived by his son, Randall K. Blain of Temple, TX, daughter and son-in-law Amy Jo and Michael D. Gandy of Liberty Hill, TX, stepson and step-daughter-in-law Custodio and Roz Campos of Waikiki, HI, step-daughter and step-son-in-law Marie and Gilbert Echevarria of Buellton, CA, step-son and step-daughter-in-law Christopher and Rebecca Campos of Ontario, CA.
