Obituary

Larry Covington was born in Graham, North Carolina, on September 13, 1938. He was the son of the late Mary Elizabeth Covington and Warren Holt. Larry entered his eternal rest on Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

At an early age, Larry attended Sunday School and church every Sunday at Wayman Chapel AME Church in Graham, North Carolina. This is also where he had attended elementary school. Larry could be seen all around the neighborhood delivering the morning paper. At the age of 12, he left Graham, North Carolina, and moved to Washington, D. C., to live with his mother. He attended Langley Middle School in Washington, D.C, and from there he graduated from Springarn High School.

After graduating from high school, Larry joined the United States Air Force in March 1958. Upon completion of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, he was assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota for four years. He then was assigned to Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, and then assigned to Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Larry then moved to the 556 th Red Horse Squadron for one year at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. Larry then went on an overseas tour to Bitburg Air Force Base in Germany for 4½ years. Finally, he moved back to Vandenberg Air Force Base where he stayed for 7½ years until his retirement from active military duty in March 1980. He had obtained the rank of Master Sergeant.

While in the Air Force, Larry met and married the love of his life Bonnie Lee Blackburn. She preceded him in death in July 1994.

Larry was affectionate, loving and kind to everyone. If you knew him, you would never forget his laughter. Larry was an active member of the American Legion Post #125 and VFW #1717 and was Post Commander from 1999 to 2000.in Lompoc, where he and his buddies enjoyed discussing the issues of the world.

Larry started his second career with the federal government in October 1980 working for the civil service in the grounds section. Larry accepted a position in the paint shop after the grounds section went contract. He was then assigned to the horizontal section in June 1984 where he was the cement finisher foreman. He remained in this position until March 1998 when he was moved to the paint section under the Reduction in Force Program. The paint shop also went contract under the A76 study. Larry retired on July 3, 1998. He had performed a total of 40 years and 4 months of faithful and honorable service for the United States government.

Larry is survived by his aunt Flossie Keck of Suitland, Maryland, and a host of cousins and friends; his stepdaughter Delores Scott of Oklahoma; his step grandchildren Scott George of Oklahoma, Tanae George, Caroline DeRoin, and George Bighorse of California; and his step greatgrandchildren Jalen Redrick of Colorado, Bonnie Pearson of California, and Cody Diekman of Arizona.
