IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lawrence "Larry"
Eugene Mendez, Sr.
December 6, 1946 – January 7, 2024
Lawrence "Larry" Mendez, 77, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife Lyla Lee Mendez, son Lawrence Mendez, Jr. and (Tammy), daughter Lori Lawrence and (Manny), brother Leroy Mendez as well as his grandchildren whom he adored; Trevor Morss, Austin Morss, Lawson Mendez and Emery Rose Mendez.
Larry was born and raised in Lompoc, California to Lena and Henry Mendez. At the young age of 18 Larry was drafted to Vietnam in the Army. He wasn't there long before his service would earn him a Purple Heart sending him to Zama Japan due to his injuries and then to Fort Ord for 6 months of healing before coming back home to Lompoc where he would meet his love, Lyla, get married and start their family.
Farming and ranching were a huge part of Larry's life for many years. Farming lima beans and raising Hereford and Angus cattle, working in the shop fixing farm equipment, etc., he was always doing something outdoors. He loved camping trips with friends at Gaviota Beach, and snow ski trips to Lake Tahoe. He had a sweet tooth like no other. Ice cream every night was a staple in the house. After retiring from the "ranch life" he worked for Lompoc Transit Mix and Lompoc City Parks and the Rec Department for a number of years.
I think most people will remember Larry for his storytelling. His endless jokes, his big smile, and his unmistakable laugh that spreads through a room. He was the king of pranks. There is no doubt that he filled a room with joy.
For the last few years, Larry resided at Atterdag Village in Solvang to be near Lyla as well as to receive assistance as well. He made many friends while he was there. He of course pulled pranks and played jokes on staff and bribed them with candy daily to keep them coming to visit him. We are forever grateful for the love and care Atterdag has given to our family. We hope Dad puts a smile on their faces when they remember him.
Services will be held Friday, January 12, 2024, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church at 2 pm, followed by a graveside service at Lompoc Cemetery at 3 pm. A celebration of life will be held immediately following, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lompoc, California.
