Memorial services celebrating the life of Lester H. "Les" Lind, 91, of Rock Island are 12 Noon, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2009 at South Park Presbyterian Church, 1501 30th St., Rock Island, with the Rev. Kenn Shedenhelm officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. A family graveside service at Greenview Memorial Gardens will precede the church service. Visitations are 3-6 p.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.
A native of Rock Island, Lester was born July 13, 1917 to Herman and Esther Cassel Lind and was a graduate of Rock Island High School. Following his WW II service with the U. S. Army, Les was employed with John Deere Plow Planter Works where he retired in 1980 after 39 years in the Production Control Department. He was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, Viking Lodge #9, Moline Eagles Lodge #1112 and V.F.W. Post 2153. Les was an avid bowler in his earlier years and, following his retirement, enjoyed playing golf, traveling and dancing at the Coliseum where many new friends were made. He died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at his home.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Peterson Lind; son, Patrick of Pismo Beach, CA, daughters, Betty (Larry) Hood and Nancy Weiford all of Waterloo, IL; grandchildren, Amber (Mark) Vogel and Erin (Ramsey) Stampp all of Waterloo and Lindsay Weiford of San Francisco, great-grandchildren, Taylor and Corey of Waterloo, a cousin, Audrey Campbell of Moline and numerous nieces and nephews. Les was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald.
Les and his family are most grateful for the enduring friendship of their neighbors Cindy and Dave Hanegman and Gene Gunnell as well as the tender care of his hospice nurse, Jenna.
