Lila Julia (Hamon) Janos, 89, joined her blessed Lord Tuesday, September 4, 2013. She had lived at the Lodge of Lompoc (Meridian of Lompoc) for 3 ½ years.
She was born October 17, 1923 in Oktaha, Oklahoma to Simon and Annie (Howell) Hamon. They moved to California working in the San Joaquin Valley area and settled in Wasco, California where she attended school, graduated and then moved to Lompoc in 1942. She was employed as a dietician helper at Camp Cooke and it was there she met Cpl. John Janos from Ohio training in the armored tanks. When he was transferred to Watertown, New York in preparation for World War II, she joined him, and they were married in August of 1943. Their time together was very short as he was to join General Patton's 5th Armored Tank Division in Germany. He was killed in March of 1945 and buried in the Netherlands.
She lived in Lompoc working for her Dad (Sy Hamon's Plumbing) and DeGroot Stationary Store. In 1955 her family moved to Delano, California where she was the bookkeeper for West Coast Hardware. She moved back to Lompoc in April of 1961 to work for Federal Electric ITT Corporation on Arguello Naval Base as a logistics clerk typist. In 1970 she moved to Clear Oaks and then returned to Lompoc in 1974.
She was a member and officer of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 211 and 8/40 for many years. She also was a member and officer of the Half Century Club and the First Southern Baptist Church. She loved to crochet, craft and needlepoint, bowled and was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed her trips to Elko, Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nevada.
She is survived by her daughter Karen (Jim) Moore of Lompoc, her grandchildren Julie (Bryan) Callaway of New Cuyama, Jim Moore, Jr. of Winnemucca, Nevada, Craig Moore of Chester, Pennsylvania, great grandchildren Tim Moore of Corpus Christi, Texas, Courtney and Colton Callaway of New Cuyama and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Cpl. John Janos, her parents Sy and Annie Hamon, her brother John Hamon, her two sisters Evelyn Costa and Gloria Cramer.
The funeral service will be held at the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary with Pastor David Polley of the Grace Baptist Church officiating on Thursday, September 12, at 10:30 am, followed by burial at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will follow in the fellowship hall of Grace Baptist Church at Third Street and Pine Avenue.
