Obituary

Lloyd Virgil Spear passed away peacefully from natural causes at his home in Buellton, CA on January 11, 2012 at the age of 90 surrounded by three generations of family and his loving wife Lily.

Lloyd was born June 26, 1921 in Fairmont, MN to Virgil and Nola Spear. Raised and educated in Algona, Iowa, Lloyd was All League in High School football and a college scholarship athlete in basketball. He joined the U. S. Air Force in 1941 and served in the Burma-Indo-China Theater during World War II.

After the war he attended Drake University, Iowa, where he met his wife, Lily. He later re-enlisted in the Air Force, rose to the grade of Master Sergeant, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served overseas in Sweden, France, Germany, and Guam. He arrived at Vandenberg AFB in 1956 as the Communications Officer and retired at the rank of Captain after 21 years of service.

Upon retirement, Lloyd and Lily, opened and operated Stateside Office Supplies in Lompoc, Santa Maria and Solvang, servicing the community for over 39 years. Lloyd was active in Lompoc Community Business organizations and was a member of the Elk's Lodge #2274.

He was a devoted family man, always caring for his family first. He loved playing golf and watching sports, especially the "Lakers". His hobby was enjoying his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lily, of 66 years; sister, Virginia Richardson of Waterloo, IA; brother, Russell (Barbara) Spear of Thousand Oaks; children, Karolyn (Bill) O'Brien of Solvang; Brad (Mary) Spear, of Lompoc; Anna (Dean) Zucker of Lompoc; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, Lompoc, CA, at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2012. Internment with military honors will follow at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
