Obituary

Lois Jane Howard, age 97, formerly of Lompoc, CA, died May 17, 2018, in Seattle, WA.

Lois was born in Orofino, Idaho, on October 5, 1920, the youngest of six daughters and two sons of Rev. John and Clara Henneman Hoffmann.  She traveled extensively with her family as a military wife, including Air Force bases in Japan and Germany, and ending up at Vandenberg AFB before settling permanently in Lompoc.  As a tourist, she visited all 50 states and five of the seven continents.  She was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening and crafts.  In 1982, she retired as a budget analyst from the 1 st Strategic Aerospace Division at Vandenberg AFB after 26 years of federal service.

Lois was an active member, elder, and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Lompoc, CA; she sang in the church choir for more than 50 years.  She was a charter member of the Lompoc Valley Master Chorale and the California Singing Stars of the Grand Chapter of California, Order of the Eastern Star.  She was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star as a past matron of Miguelito Chapter and as a member of Southern California Grand Representatives.  Other memberships include Mokkattam, Daughters of the Nile, National Active and Retired Federal Employees, National Association of Uniformed Services, Society of Military Widows, the Lompoc Hospital Auxiliary, and the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

Lois is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Mary Howard of Huntsville, AL; daughter and son-in-law Kathryn Howard and Bill Sudbrink of Lompoc; grandson Matthew P. Howard of Jackson, WY; granddaughter Suzanne Mateosky (Benjamin), great grandson Oliver Mateosky, of Jackson, WY; step-grandsons Bill Sudbrink, Jr. (Emily) of Silver Springs, MD; Todd Sudbrink (Kristin) of Burtonsville, MD; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Martin P. Howard and her five sisters and two brothers.

A Celebration of Life was held at the Crista Senior Living Center in Shoreline, WA, on June 4, 2018.  A memorial service will be held at the Cityview Community Church, 1600 Berkeley Drive, Lompoc, CA 93436, on August 18, 2018, at 1000 Hours.  Interment will follow at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lompoc Cityview Community Church or to a charity of your choice.
