Obituary

Lois was born to Albert and Alvina Lupkes in 1924 in Minnesota. She passed away peacefully at home August 28th after a brief illness. Days before her passing, family and friends gathered to celebrate her 99th birthday.

She grew up on her father's farm during the Great Depression. With no running water, she used a pump and pail to bring water inside. Early in life she learned to cook and bake on a large wood burning stove. She learned food preservation, embroidery, sewing, knitting, and crotchet which she enjoyed throughout her life. Homemaking skills she began passing on to her daughters Carol and Joann early in their lives.

Lois married the love of her life, Lewis Johnson, in December of 1945, after he returned home from his service in WWII. They were married for 49 years and 3 months before his passing in 1994. Lois and Lewis started their family and moved from Maple Grove, Minnesota to San Diego in 1956 then relocated permanently to Lompoc in 1959.

A lifelong Homemaker, Lois enjoyed hosting family and friends every Holiday, preparing large dinners to perfection, in her tiny kitchen. Often, a "Guest of Honor", from the community, would be invited to join the Holiday meal. Mrs. Harris, a retired second grade El Camino Elementary school teacher or an airman far from home. One time Lewis invited a convalescent home resident he met, "The Masked Marvel", a wrestler who would stand and take a 150 lb. cannon ball to the stomach before disbelieving and amazed crowds. Over the years each guest added special interest and color to the meal's conversation, and everyone had a great time. Lois will always be remembered, with affection, as the "Queen of Pies".

Lois was an office holding member of the Order of Eastern Star for 50+ years. She helped organize and was active with Lompoc Bethel #349 International Order of Job's Daughters, a young lady's organization, for over 35 years. She was recognized and honored with the "Robert Burns Award" for her years of dedicated service.

Lois remained active and in good health throughout her life. She gardened and washed and waxed her car by hand well into her nineties. She enjoyed meeting friends for coffee and donuts and playing "Word Search" and "Bubbles" on her tablet. She was entertained and amused by the hummingbirds outside her window.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Lewis, parents Albert and Alvina, brother Wayne and sister Gloria.

She is survived by daughters Carol LaRue and Joann Johnson of Lompoc. Grandchildren Amber Johnson, John LaRue and Sarah LaRue of Lompoc, California and Carrie Griffin of San Antonio, Texas. Numerus Great and Great-Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews, and many friends, and neighbors.
