Obituary

Lucy Virginia Thorpe Rocha, age 92, passed away on March 21, 2024, after a lengthy illness. She was born on May 12, 1931, in Virginia to Dora and Lucian Thorpe. Lucy was from the District of Lee in Fauquier County Virginia where she grew up with nine siblings. She married Joseph Rocha and became a mother to Ron Rocha in 1949. The family moved to California in 1958, where she worked in the retail fashion industry for over 50 years. Lucy and Joe loved to travel. They visited many places and enjoyed sharing their adventures with family and friends. After Joe passed away, Lucy continued her traveling adventures.

Lucy was heavily involved in American Legion Auxiliary Unit #211 where she had over 60 years of membership, embodying the values of patriotism and faith. She was widely known as the Poppy Queen. She was involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Portuguese Groups. Her dedication to these organizations, especially as the Poppy Queen, touched the lives of many and will be remembered fondly.

Lucy is survived by her son Ron; granddaughter Marion Rocha (Art); grandpuppy Scarlett; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, all her siblings Mattie, Mary, Texana, Nellie, Betty, John, Callie, Albert, and Henry; daughter-in-law Ann Rocha; granddaughters Jamie and Ann Rocha.

Grandma's life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her family, community, and faith. She was a pillar of strength and kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand and offer words of wisdom. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire us all. As we say goodbye to our beloved grandma, we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, surrounded by the love of those who went before her. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
