Obituary

Malcolm "Roy" Caldwell, 73, of Lompoc passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2011.

Roy was born on July 9, 1938 to Andrew Jackson, Jr. and Geneieve Caldwell in Chicago, Illinois. At an early age, Roy excelled in baseball. At the age of 17, Roy was offered a position as a catcher in the minor leagues. Unfortunately, due to age requirements, Roy was unable to accept the position. He then joined the US Air Force at the age of 18 and proudly served for 26 years in Korea, Vietnam, Guam, Colorado, Kansas, Massachusetts, Sacramento and finally at Vandenberg AFB. While stationed in Korea Roy took a liking and excelled in the Japanese martial art form, Judo. Roy was a renowned competitor in the sport and competed in numerous International tournaments representing the U.S. military team. Roy achieved the level of black belt, 2nd Don. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he transitioned into civil service, a career lasting 15 years. He served as the Director of Family Support Services for over 10 years until his early retirement in 2003. During this time, Roy earned his BA in Psychology at Chapman University. Roy held various certifications in facilitating Organizational Management programs.

Roy was an avid reader. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his life companion of 19 years, Maria, his stepsons: Augusto G. Rodriguez, Jr. of Lompoc, Daryl J. Rodriguez (Denise) of Wichita, KA, Lawrence J. Rodriguez of Chicago, IL and Rudy J. Rodriguez (Liza) of Lompoc. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mikayla E. Rodriguez, Nicole M. Rodriguez, Aaron T. Rodriguez of Wichita, KA, Steven Rodriguez, Mathew Rodriguez, Joshua T. Rodriguez, Gavin J. Rodriguez, Sophia L. Rodriguez of Lompoc.

A viewing and vigil will be held on Thursday, September 22, from 4-8pm, including the rosary at 6pm in the Chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 23, at Queen of Angels in Mission Hills at 10:00 am. Graveside service will be at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
