A quiet, gracious lady, Marie Reiner Streyle, 102 passed on peacefully in her home in Lompoc on Sunday, February 16, 2014. She was born on September 20, 1911, inTripp, South Dakota into and immigrant, pioneer family. She was the middle child of 7 children born to Karolina and John Reiner. Mr. Reiner came from South Russia to homestead the Dakota Territory in the late 1800's. Their descendants still live and work on this land. She was the last living member of her immediate family.
Marie lived in Lompoc with her younger sister, Clara Zook, for many years until Clara passed away on July 26, 2013. The "two girls" were inseparable as they attended many social events around town. She was active in the Half Century Club, Stitch and Chatter, Widow and Widowers Group, Lompoc Community Woman's Club, The Grange and the Lompoc Presbyterian Church. She also loved to travel and her most recent big adventure was a New England Cruise for her 100th birthday which she celebrated with many family members.
Before moving to Lompoc, Marie and her first husband, Gideon lived in Tehachapi, CA. They had a small farm, including an orchard and they raised thousands of chickens during the war. She will be laid to rest next to Gideon in Bakersfield, CA.
She was well known for her talents of crochet and needlework along with her mastery of many old German recipes (especially Kuchen and Strudela), which she passed down and taught to the younger generations of her family. She also enjoyed gardening and canning her own fruits and vegetables.
She had no children of her own but was blessed with stepchildren and grandchildren through her second husband Hiram. She was a "second mom" to many.
A long life, well lived, but still too soon. Marie will be mourned and missed by her extended family and many friends.
The graveside service will be Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 3 pm at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bakersfield, California. The arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Assisted Hospice Care.
